For Women’s Health
Evening primrose oil (EPO)
contains an omega-6 essential fatty acid, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which is
felt to be the active ingredient. EPO has been studied in a wide variety of
disorders, particularly those affected by metabolic products of essential fatty
acids.
Omega-6 fatty acids
are considered essential fatty acids (EFAs), which means that they are essential
to human health but cannot be made in the body. They are generally necessary for
stimulating skin and hair growth, maintaining bone health, regulating
metabolism, and maintaining reproductive capability. There are several different
types of omega-6 fatty acids. Most omega-6 fatty acids are consumed in the diet
from vegetable oils as linoleic acid.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA)
is an essential fatty acid (EFA) in the omega-6 family that is found primarily
in plant-based oils. GLA, via conversion to PGE1, exhibits anti-inflammatory,
antithrombotic, antiproliferative, and lipid-lowering potential. It also
enhances smooth muscle relaxation and vasodilation. In addition, EFAs including
GLA are important constituents of membrane phospholipids, including the
mitochondrial membrane, where they enhance the integrity and the fluidity of the
membrane.
